This is part of our 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution Series, funded by a grant from the New Hampshire Humanities.

Program Description:
​Jude Hall (c.1747 - 1827) of Exeter was a distinguished Black Revolutionary War soldier who earned the nickname "Old Rock" for his valor. Hi s extraordinary service record spanning all eight years (1775-1783) makes him one of the longest serving soldiers of any race in the struggle for American freedom. Jude's story continues when he returns to Exeter, marries, and later faces more struggles for his family's freedom in the new nation. Hear updates on his family today, and the efforts underway across the region to provide a more accurate picture of this once obscured man, and others like him.

Mary E. Bartlett Memorial Library was chosen for a New Hampshire Humanities' Civic Life and Belonging Grant and we are using this money to develop a 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution series of programs and activities. Up first in our series is a presentation on Wednesday, May 20th at 6:30PM by Meg Mott called How The Constitution Helps Us Disagree.

Program Description:

Deliberation is the practice that holds our democracy together, but does it always lead to better decisions? When citizens only talk to like-minded citizens, the thinking gets stuck and the decisions tend to be more extreme. This presentation gives participants a chance to find new ways to think about a contentious issue using the basic principles of the Constitution: freedom of speech and due process. Instead of carving out one’s (predictable) position in the culture wars, we’ll look at the best arguments on a contentious issue from the view point of progressives, conservatives, and libertarians. By the end of the discussion, participants will have a greater understanding of how the Constitution can help us to foster political friendships.
