Literacy Tip:

Books of all kinds inspire thinking and the formation of new ideas, but the books read today were written specifically to get children using their imagination and understanding the power of their ideas.  A fun activity to do is to give your child a challenge question like "what are five things you can do with a stick and a ball?" The answer can be in the form of a conversation (this is a great way to pass the time in a vehicle!), it can be written as a story, or a picture can be drawn to represent the answer. Ask follow up questions, but try to refrain from directing the answer to something you come up with.  The idea is to encourage the free flow of ideas and creativity.

Songs & Activities

Movement
Johnny Works With 1 Hammer

(During verse 1, hammer 1 fist on your knee to the beat of the song. During verse 2, hammer 2 fists on 2 legs.  During verse 3, hammer 2 fists and add 1 foot stomping. During verse 4, hammer 2 fists and stomp 2 feet. During verse 5, add a nodding head.)

Johnny works with 1 hammer, 1 hammer, 1 hammer,
Johnny works with 1 hammer, then he works with 2.

Johnny works with 2 hammers, 2 hammers, 2 hammers,
Johnny works with 2 hammers, then he works with 3.

Johnny works with 3 hammers, 3 hammers, 3 hammers,
Johnny works with 3 hammers, then he works with 4.

Johnny works with 4 hammers, 4 hammers, 4 hammers,
Johnny works with 4 hammers, then he works with 5.

Johnny works with 5 hammers, 5 hammers, 5 hammers,
Johnny works with 5 hammers, then he goes to sleep! (pretend to sleep)

Craft

Children were given cardboard bases cut in "blob" shapes, and a variety of recycled materials. No instructions were given, except to invent something new.  The children created some really fun new inventions!
