Literacy Tip:
Picture books have so much to offer! On the first reading, the basic story is revealed. On subsequent readings, other layers can be discovered. In the book, On the Beach, the words tell a story, but the pictures tell an underlying story, helping children to see that careful observation can lead to predictions for the next page. They race to see if they can find the clue before it is revealed. This engagement is exactly what many picture books offer. Funny picture books often contain humor that is meant to entertain the adult while reading. Try paying attention to the extra layers contained in picture books – you just might find yourself hooked on picture books!!

Literacy Tip:
Children develop topics of interest at a very young age. Think about how many times your child has asked to repeat a story or watch a movie. Repetition is an important learning tool! (Though, admittedly, it can be a challenge to read a book over and over and over again!) Reading stories about talents or abilities can be a great spark for developing interests to be explored. In storytime this week, we read a book about an artist, one that lives deep in the ocean at that! As a follow up, we gave the children a framed piece of cardstock and asked them to be an artist. The results were amazing and there was definitely a sense of pride in the room! Maybe one day we’ll see your child’s work in a museum!!

Collage Art The children were given a piece of cardstock with a framed outline. A variety of materials were provided along with glue sticks. The children were encouraged to create their own masterpieces and photos were taken of each child with a mustache prop just like the octopus in our story, I'm The Best Artist in the Ocean! Literacy Tip:
Young children are naturally curious which makes this the perfect time to introduce science! Children learn cause and effect, that important things can be learned from making mistakes, and that the world around them is always reacting. Perhaps most importantly, they learn that science is fun! It builds curiosity and brings new levels of understanding and connection building to their world. At this time in your child’s life, it is less important to explain what is happening and more important to let him/her discover and ask questions. More now than ever before, publishers are putting out great books with science concepts for the youngest of children. Paired with a simple experiment or two, these resources are invaluable. Be sure to check out the science section of our library for ideas.

Books like the ones we focused on this week are great because they provide a starting place for creative thought. Just like the children in the book, Going Places, your child might enjoy making something new from recycled materials you have around your house. Encourage your child to talk about the process and the end result to establish purpose and invention. This is also a great time to talk about how mistakes can turn into opportunities for something new. For a challenge, give your child a problem to solve. Google "invention challenges for children" for some ideas. See below for invention kit/tinkering kit ideas on Pinterest.
